2001-2002 June Mitton Scholarship Award
George Mitton, along with his Board of Directors had no difficulty in deciding who to give the Scholarship Awards to this year. The two young men, Gabriel Montoya (9 year player) and Agustin Nunez (6 year player) have been with North Huntington Beach FC their entire soccer career and were coached by Ed Montoya and Daniel Montoya. They're final year will be under the guidance of coach Eddie Soto.
George feels this award is closer to home because both of the young men also knew June and they feel highly honored in receiving the June Mitton Scholarship Award. Each player will receive $4,000 to help with their education.
Gabriel Montoya is currently a senior at Millikan Senior High School where he won a C.I.F. championship. He also won 1 State Open Cup Championship (U-10) and 3 times National State Cup Finalist (Boys 14, 15, 17) while playing with NHB. After graduating from Millikan he plans on attending Long Beach City College as a part time student. Reason being, he plans on playing one more year with his club. He then will apply to a four-year University to further his education and continue his soccer career.
Agustin Nunez also is graduating from Millikan Senior High School. He has won all the awards that his teammate has won (except U-10 championship) while playing for NHB. He also plans on attending Long Beach City College and play for NHB one more year. He then plans on attending a four year college and plans on majoring in Early Childhood Education. He also will continue pursuing his goal and dream of becoming a professional soccer player.
After talking with these young men, George thinks that they want one more opportunity to bring a National State Cup Championship to the Club and also be around their friends from the team that they have played with for so many years.
