NHB GU12 Black went down to Coronado for a little fun, sun, and soccer at the Crown City Classic. Coach Bartko’s goals for the weekend were to use the tournament for team/family bonding and to help prepare the girls for Silver South in the Fall. The team bonding was the easy part as the families took full use of all the Hotel facilities, hit a few tourist spots, and genuinely enjoyed lots of hours together having a great time. With Goal #1 accomplished it was time to change the attention to goal #2.
While the girls came ready to have fun they also came ready to play. They started out beating the two San Diego teams in their bracket (Hotspurs USA and Rebels) on Saturday 2 -0 and 3-1 respectively, clinching a spot in the championship with an extra game to play. After a 2-2 draw with OC Premier on Sunday morning to finish out pool play, the rematch was set for 5:00 PM Sunday evening at the Cays in Coronado overlooking the Pacific Ocean. With OC Premier playing in CSL Gold in the Fall, the challenge for NHB was stiff, but the girls were excited and ready for it. Coach Sean may have to give Will Farrell an assist on this game, as the girls took their underdog role to heart after watching “Kicking and Screaming” poolside the night before. NHB came out on fire taking a 3-0 lead by halftime with spirited play by all. OC Premier managed to get back into the contest with two late free kicks, but in the end it was all NHB as they hoisted the Cup as 2011 Crown City Classic Champions. Special kudos go to Hannah Mathews for filling in for our vacationing goalkeeper. She had an outstanding tournament. The girls as a whole showed tremendous heart and determination which has always been the hallmark of NHB.
Go NHB – You knooow!!!!!!
