Shannon Bergeland was awarded the June and George Mitton Memorial Scholarship at NHB Futbol Club’s annual dinner on June 12. Ms. Bergeland graduated with Honors from Edison High School in 2009 and will be attending San Francisco State University to study physical therapy. With a natural left foot she played left wing at NHB for coaches Francisco Flores and Kim Engesser and for Edison. “Shannon is very dependable and we relied on her to start our attacks and hit the crosses from the left. Her skill on the left created problems for our opponents and allowed our team to open up play and score quickly. She is a dedicated athlete and an exceptional student and I know she will be successful at SFSU”, said Engesser. Ms. Bergeland will use the $4,000 award to help her offset college expenses.

The NHB scholarship was started in 1998 as the June Mitton Memorial Award to honor the over 20 years of volunteer service Mrs. Mitton provided to the non-profit soccer club. The award was expanded in 2009 to honor George Mitton and his 30 plus years as NHB President, coach and mentor and his dedication to education. Recipients are selected from NHB graduating seniors based on their academic record, commitment to college education, and character. The memorial is funded by proceeds from the NHB Cup, now in its 31st year, and by the new George Mitton Memorial tournament.
