The North Huntington Beach Futbol Club Boys U9 team finished the regular season with an impressive 12 wins, 0 losses and 0 ties. The team scored 70 goals while only allowing 9 goals. The NHB U9 team had the second best record among over 90 teams in the Coast Soccer League. NHB Black BU9 is the number 1 team in Orange County, undefeated versus the top Silver bracketed teams in season and tournament play. The team also had an impressive showing in their league cup, making it to the “Sweet 16” before losing in penalty kicks to Barcelona, a top Silver North team.
With 5 returning members--Garrett Zolg, Hayden Street, Remy Marton, Andrew Adame, and keeper Slater Kucera—all of whom played up as 6 and 7 year olds on last year’s U9 team, there is a lot of experience, strength, and heart shown by the boys this year. Ricky Masters, Oscar Catalan, Sean Amberry, Jeremy Anderson, Matthew Paniz, Jared Velazquez, and Asa Fuller round out the best boys under 9 team in Orange County. Robert Zolg manages the team, while Eric Marton acts as assistant coach and trains the boys under the leadership of head coach Ed Montoya. Ed has an impressive coaching record that has spanned over 30 years.
The boys have developed such a strong bond, not just on the field, but as friends off the field as well. This bond has translated into a positive and passionate attitude toward one another, and for soccer, the largest and most exciting sport in the world!
Southern California is home to the largest and most competitive club soccer leagues in the country. Top teams from all over the Western U.S. participate in SoCal tournaments, seeking the fierce competition they can’t get at home. Two of the largest tournaments on the West Coast are NHB Cup in Huntington Beach over Labor Day weekend and the Nomads Tournament in San Diego over Thanksgiving weekend. The NHB Black Boys U9 finished both tournaments as finalists, with wins over some of the top teams in the Western United States. The boys also swept the Fullerton Rangers Classic Tournament over the summer with an incredible 7-0 win in the finals. The boys look forward to finishing strong in several tournaments slated for January and will work hard for an impressive showing at State Cup.
