Shannon Bergeland was awarded the June and George Mitton Memorial Scholarship at NHB Futbol Club’s annual dinner on June 12. Ms. Bergeland graduated with Honors from Edison High School in 2009 and will be attending San Francisco State University

The George and June Mitton Scholarship winners were announced at the club’s NHB Night on June 13, 2008. The winners, announced by new club president, Shereen Walter and Randy Lack were acknowledged for their academic achievements, soccer achievements and loyalty and dedication to their respective NHB teams.

The award is given every year to athletes that have played for the club at least 3 years. There is a $10,000 grant that will be split between the athletes that are chosen to help them with there college future.

This year there were 4 participates that received the award. 2 young ladies from the Girls U-17 NHB Black coached by Raul Ruiz and 2 young men that played for Boys U-18 NHBFC coached by Sean Dick.

To commemorate June's involvement with the club and its members, NHBFC created the June Mitton Memorial Award. The recipient of the annual award, in George Mitton's words, will be "a dependable person" boy or girl on the senior team, not necessarily the best player, but someone planning to go to college."

George Mitton, President of the NHB club, awarded the June Mitton Memorial scholarships to three club members who are graduating this year. The awards, of $4,000 and two for $2,000 each, were presented over the summer at Golden West College and are named in honor of Mitton's wife who passed away three years ago. The awards are given to NHB players who have been with the club at least three years, and exemplify the spirit of excellence, commitment and scholarship that NHB strives to promote in all of its players.
